Komen for the Cure Wins Inaugural Run Walk Ride Pacesetter Award for I AM THE CURE. campaign

Campaign created by PowerPact wins Best Mission Integration

New York – March 9, 2009 – PowerPact, the forward-thinking promotions and shopper marketing agency, together with Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, announced today that its results-smashing event marketing program I AM THE CURE.® is the recipient of the first-ever 2009 Run Walk Ride’s Pacesetter Award for Best Mission Integration. The Pacesetter award, presented by the Run Walk Ride Fundraising Council, is the industry's highest honor recognizing the best work in athletic event fundraising programs.

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series is a leader in the breast cancer arena with millions in attendance and billions of dollars are raised. But, the reality is breast cancer is still very prevalent due in part to a lack of early detection, and a lack of education contributes to the issue. PowerPact and Komen wanted to harness the power of the Race and use it as the forum to educate the millions about the importance of early detection.

I AM THE CURE.®, which was created by PowerPact and Komen, teaches people simple steps they need to know to take charge of their breast health. It speaks to the importance of early detection and provides simple, action-oriented chants that Race participants can take home and put into action. The program was able to effectively educate participants; 95% of were able to recall the programs survival messages and lifesaving tips.

Led by spirited and colorful Cure Leaders and Race signage, catchy messages are embedded throughout the Race with chants such as, "Best Protection is Early Detection! I AM THE CURE.® " and "With Mammograms and Breast Exams! I AM THE CURE.® " Additionally, Race-goers take home a breast lump key chain which features discs representing the size of breast lumps found through various screen techniques. To further reinforce the education beyond the Race, participants are encouraged to visit the fun and interactive site, www.iamthecure.org to test their knowledge.

"Our mission is to educate participants about breast self-awareness and early detection – tools that are key to survival," said Brent Fox, Program Manager, Komen Race for the Cure. "We harness the emotion of Race events to connect with participants in an environment where they are most receptive to receiving and listening to information about breast cancer. And it's working – the post-Race research results showed a significant increase in educational message retention."

"We are very proud of this campaign and how well it works to meet Komen’s educational goals. Because of this program, participants will not only feel good about honoring someone and raising money, but they’ll also help themselves through awareness and education," said Alison Provost, CEO of PowerPact Holdings Group. "Everything we do at PowerPact always relates back to changing behavior, and the behavior we sought to change here, active breast health care, was very profound. With 95% recall, the program is working. We are so pleased about program’s impact and the recognition of our combined efforts."
